About Melissa Derrick

Melissa Derrick for City Council

I am running for a second term on City Council. I began this journey, not because I have political aspirations, but because I wanted to be a voice for “US” at a time where rampant, unchecked growth was destroying the very fabric of our beloved community. I will continue to endeavor to find balance between growth and preservation, city and university needs, while keeping an eye on the future, knowing decisions made today will create the San Marcos inherited by generations to come.

I will continue to work towards a more dynamic downtown that is a destination for locals and visitors: one that’s alive with the arts, music, entertainment and unique local businesses. I will advance a prosperous economy while setting high standards for employers, developers and businesses that we invite to join us in shaping our city’s future.

Furthermore, I have an obligation to our citizens to finish the job I began during my first term to ensure that our new land development code is a true reflection of what our community desires and deserves. We have codified the tools to guide growth with the passage of CODE SMTX, but we’ve only just begun the accompanying neighborhood character studies and small area plans that will allow us to direct growth responsibly and ethically. New council members will have a STEEP learning curve, so I feel it’s crucial to serve another term and finish this process. I possess the knowledge necessary to continue the vital tasks ahead.

San Marcos has been my home for most of the last 33 years, and both my children are BISM’S. I was employed by Texas State University for twenty years, and currently operate a small computer repair and refurbishing company with my husband. I’m a passionate advocate for improving the lives of our citizens with disabilities as well as families and youth.

Our town is experiencing growing pains, yet I know we have the courage as a community to move to the future, with both forward thinking and preservation balanced ethically.
